ALPHA LEO CLUB OF PETERHOUSE REPORT TO THE COUNCIL MEETING ON THE 12TH OF AUGUST 2006 IN HARARE

ALPHA LEO CLUB OF PETERHOUSE REPORT TO THE COUNCIL MEETING ON THE 12TH OF AUGUST 2006 IN HARARE

Greetings to all Leos and Lions,

The Club

Our club consists of 24 members with 9 of them holding board positions. The Leos from Harare West inducted us all on The 17th of June and it was a memorable evening. For meetings we meet once every two weeks to discuss upcoming events and our visits.

Finances: Charity Account-Z$120m
Administration Account-Z$1.2m

ACTIVITIES

Once every 2 weeks we visit places in our community with the less fortunate, the sick, or the old. Although we strive to go once every two weeks there are times when we cannot do so due to circumstances beyond our control. These are some of the places in our community that we have been able to serve so far.

a) KUKURA NESHUNGU
This is an institute for mentally and in some cases physically handicapped children. The matron Mrs Gambe spoke to us in length about how important it is to embrace the less fortunate in our community. All the members were able to open up their hearts and express their love to these children and enthusiastically play games with them. We donated stationery that the children would use at school.
b) MARONDERA HOSPITAL
When we visited this place we always went to the children's wards. We sat with the children and gave them fruit and talked to them, as we tried to make them forget the pain they were experiencing. We wished them a speedy recovery and sang songs with them.
c) BORRADAILE TRUST
This is an old people's home. It is always very pleasant to sit down and chat with the residents of this place while they would be eating the cakes we would have brought for them.
d) MARIRANGWE SCHOOL
We visited this place for the first time. It is a school in Marondera that is still developing and has children who walk very long distances just to attend this school. We visited them once and we were able to lose ourselves and play with the children after school and do many other activities.
e) NYAMENI ORPHANAGE
This place is also known as Musha Wevana. This is a place where some of the orphans in our Marondera community stay. When we visited them the children wasted no time in dragging us to their favourite play spots and forcing us to play games some of us had personally never heard of before. We never imagined the day 5 year old children would teach us pupils how to do things right especially in the form of games and entertainment. This was an unforgettable experience for us all. We were able to donate blankets to the children to protect them from the cold weather during winter.
f) MRS MAPFUMO
She is the wife of one of the cooks at Peterhouse. This lady was run over by a bus in the communal lands and therefore got her leg amputated from the knee down. 3 years ago Leo Club bought her a leg brace so that she would be able to walk properly, but this year she was having trouble walking because it had worn out. Mr Mapfumo then told our club about this and that he could not afford to buy a new leg brace for his wife and sought for our assistance. We were able to buy her a new leg brace which was fitted in, in July 2006.
g) FUNDRAISING
To fundraise for the club we usually
1)run a tuck-shop at major sports events like rugby and basketball matches
2)Carrying out raffles is also another way by which we fundraise e.g. cakeraffles.
3)Pop corn sales and burger rolls sales are also usually a success.
4)In the beginning of the year we held a joke competition within the schoolwhich proved to be a great success.
h) TWINNING
So far we are twinning with Nyanga High School and they have invited us to their workshop on the 15th of September 2006.

I) UPCOMING EVENTS include:
• Soccer and basketball Tournament
• Leo Club Fun Day
• School clean up
• A raffle
• Team building event
• Various popcorn sales and tuck shops.

In ending this report I want to remind all of you of this poem which sums up what a real Leo does.

I WILL DO MORE
I will do more than care, I will help,
I will do more than earn, I will enrich
I will do more than dream, I will work,
I will do more than teach, I will inspire,
I will do more than forgive, I will forget
I will more than fair, I will be kind,
I will do more than believe, I will practise,
I will do more than be friendly; I will be a friend
I will be more than a citizen; I will be a patriot,
I will do more than give, I WILL SERVE

I AM A LEO

If I had my way I would include a line which I feel is prominent and of great importance to both the club and to society and it goes like this:

I will do more than my best; I will do what is right.

I AM A LEO.
