FINAL REPORT FOR THE PETERHOUSE ALPHA LEO CLUB

FINAL REPORT FOR THE ALPHA LEO
CLUB OF PETERHOUSE 2006

The Alpha Leo Club of Peterhouse has been invovled in numerous activities over the past year in order to raise money to assist the Marondera community, as well as to try and bring joy into the lives of the less fortunate.
The club started off by announcing nine new board memebers as well as welcoming the other fifteen members. They were then inducted in by the Leos form Harare West at a successful induction dinner held at Peterhouse on the 17th of June.
The Leo Club would meet every two weeks to discuss upcoming events as well as the plans for various visits. The year began with the club holding Z$80 000 and, bu October the Charity account contained Z$120000(revalued currency) as most of the money had been used to fund various charity events, whilst the administaration account held Z$1200(revalued currency). Once every two weeks they visited places in the community with the less fortunate, the sick and the old. The visited Marondera Hospital on the 20th of Febuary and spent time with the sick children. They also visited Kukura Neshungu, an institute for mentally and in some cases physically handicapped children. At borrodaile Trust, which the club visited occasionally, the club was able to sit and chat with the residents, while they ate the cakes the club had bought for them. The members also got a chance to lose themselves and play with the children of Nyameni Orphanage.
During the course of the year, the club took part in many fundraising activities. They ran tuckshops at various major sporting events as well as carrying out numerous raffles. At the beginning of the year, they held a Leo Club Joke Competition for both Peterhouse schools, which proved to be a great success, as they were able to but thirty blankets using the money they had raised, which they donated to Nyameni Orphanage. Soccer and Basketball tournaments were also held in which sufficient money was raised to fund other club activities. The club had planned to have a Leo Fun Day but, unfortunatly the project had to be prematurly ended due to lack of adequate funds. Using some of the money raised, the club was able to help a women named Mrs Mapfumo, a wife of one of the hired help at Peterhouse, who had been run over by a bus. They were able to raise enough money to buy her a new leg brace to replace the old one which had worn out.
Throughout the year, the club twinned with Nyanga High School, who the invited them to a workshop which was held on the 15th of September, but unfortunatly the Alpha Leo Club of Peterhouse was unable to attend .
In conclussion, the Leo Club would like to request for Leo badges or details on how these may be obtained.

Many Thanks

SELEBI-PHIKWE REPORT TO CONVENTION

LEOS CLUB OF SELEBI-PHIKWE
CLUB REPORT PRESENTED AT THE DISTRICTS CONFERENCE IN GABORONE (UB),
6TH-9TH APRIL 2007

MEMBERSHIP
Our membership stands at 10, 9 Leos and only 1 prospective member.

MEETINGS

We have one meeting in a month on Saturdays, but we do hold meetings frequently if we are carrying out projects. The club meetings have been put on hold since August 2006 and we resumed this year Feb 10, 2007.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES

STORM VICTIMS
On 12th December 2006 some members of the club joined the Lions club Disaster Committee to assist the victims of the rains that hit hard in Phikwe around November. These victims from the areas Botshabelo, Ikageleng and Sesame were given food and toiletry supplies such as vegetables, flour, soap e.t.c.

UNIFORM DONATION (FEB)

The club members donated their school uniforms which were then given to the guidance
teacher in Selebi- Phikwe senior school to pass on to the necessary people.

DONATION BOX

We got a donation box made to place in stores so that people may donate whatever they can. The box has a little slot for inserting money and another slot for when we want to remove the money. It also has a sticker with the club name and purpose for the donation box. Our first donation box was placed in OK Supermarket on the 1st April 2007. We are still negotiating with the other shops to let us place our donation boxes in their shops.

SEARCH FOR NEW MEMBERS
The current club members are school leavers who are all planning on going away in the near future, hence our P.R.O took letters to the headmasters of junior schools to try and convince them to help us find responsible students who can become members of the club. We also requested that the schools sponsor the chosen students. The idea seemed to please the school heads and we are expecting a positive response from them next week.

FINANCES: For charity- P30. 00
For administration- P 135.50

CHALLENGES

The has club few members and some have already moved out of town handicaps the Club a bit when it comes to carrying out some project.

We are also experiencing lack of support from the community e.g. we have been trying to sell our luncheon tickets and only a few people have bought. Despise this we are still hopeful that in time people we come to support us.

REGION 4 REPORT FOR CONVENTIO

LEO DISTRICT 412
REGION 4 REPORT
GABORONE CONENVTION 16 APRIL 2007

Greetings in leonism!

I sincerely trust that you are all in good health and it is only by the full grace of the Lord that we can continue serving.i believe that it is an honour to our community and the world at large to have such a community compassionate, intellectual and reality oriented individuals serving in our
district today, thank you all!

Im proud to say that even though the number of clubs in my region have dwindled those still funtional have been quite active in serving our community, lately not much have happened in the region due to reasons beyond my control and it was quite difficult for me to attend or coordinate any activity in my region due to my change of location.
active clubs in the region are3 that is Solusi University Omegas, Gifford High, and Townsend High Leos. Bulawayo Omegas is reviving and plans are underway in making the club vibrant. Coming up with a NUST University Leo Club was unsuccessful due to rules and regulations governing their university such that interested members had to join Bulawayo Omegas. Solusi University was so active and undertook a very successful project in their history,GIVE A BEARER CAMPAIGN, to help blind kids in their community. Gifford also did just great in their acivities.

I would have wanted to enjoy and participate together with everyone in this years convention meeting but i am suppose to be back in college this Wednesday in preparation for my graduation.
Lets all keep serving or community and know that nomatter how much you have you can still give help. Even those who have it all in life are waiting for you to give them what they do not have, a different view on life, a glimpse at something beautiful and a respite from daily chaos.
keep the leo fire burning

Leo District Vice President Report to LD412 Convention-6-9th April 2007

Leo District 412
Leo District Vice President
P.O. Box 2395 Gaborone
+267 72766907
Report to LD412 Convention-6-9th April 2007

Greetings to you all, i hope you are having an exciting Leoistic year .Things have been very slow on my side, particularly my presence being felt as the District Vice President, so I would not have much word to say.
My duties as Vice President were mainly to help the current President carry out his duties well and efficiently. This means filling in for him where he cant make it, and any other related matters. Another duty would have been to monitor membership within the District, as Membership Director. Well, membership for the part of Region 5, Botswana, my home country, is a bit on the low side. Clubs have been dying due to lack of continuity of membership, particularly for school based clubs. As it is the all but 4 clubs are slowly drifting away, the 4 clubs being Maun, Mahalapye, Selebi Phikwe and Gaborone West. There is hope to revive
the other clubs with the new students being recruited from second semester. And i have faith that all will go well with the Region in the next Year, There are two new kids on the block. Molepolole and Lobatse, with good intentions, to keep them around for a long time and provide fellow citizens with the much needed service.
It is my wish to see membership, particularly that of Region 5 becoming more than what it is right now, and have its presence highly fell within the District as a whole.
On that note, i hope you all have a good time in Botswana, and a beautiful new Leoistic Year as we continue to serve fellow brothers and sisters.

D G's Adress at the Presidents Dinner

Speech to the Leo District 412 Convention by District Governor Major Kebby Konnie,7th April 2007, University of Botswana

Now is the time

Thank you for the opportunity to talk to you this evening ,I would also like to thank the leadership for inviting me to this historic convention ,hosted by Gaborone West Leo club. I am aware of your great achievements and the great leadership that the Leo district has shown.
This is a historic convention because it is a year of milestones;
On June 7,1917,Melvn Jones invited his fellow Chicago business leaders to help lay the ground work for an organization focused on improving their communities. Today,1.3 million men and women Lions in 200 countries and geographic locations are working to make the world a better place. Its a year we as Lions are celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the Association (June 1917) .This year also marks the associations 90th annual convention. Register now to join the festivities at the International Convention in Chicago ,Illinois, USA.
Half a century ago ,members of the Glenside Lions Club in Pennsylvania ,USA, saw a need to work with the youth in their community .They began a club for teens in the local high school ,creating the first official Leo Club .There are now more than 140 000 Leos around the world. Leos attending the 2007 Lions International Convention will celebrate this milestone with the Leo conference global Conference. In 2007, we celebrate 50 years of Leo program, a pride and future of the Association.
Although always present as Lionesses and in other supportive roles ,women were officially invited to become Lions in 1987.Two decades later ,women are the fastest growing group of Lions ,making up nearly 20% of all members and taking on numerous leadership roles within the association, including 30.5% of council chairpersons .Today we celebrate 20th anniversary of women Lions ( July 1987)
For the past two decades , Lions clubs have sponsored, the Peace poster contest in schools and sponsored youth groups. The program provides children ages 11 through to 13 with a creative outlet to discuss their feelings for peace. Through the contest , Lions have made connections received media exposure and had fun. The theme of the 2007-08 contest is PEACE AROUND THE WORLD
Today we celebrate the 20th Year of the Peace Poster Program ( January 1988)

As rightful proud as we are of District 412 and our home towns and communities ,one of the most rewarding aspects of being a Leo is being part of an International Association with more than 1.3 million members. Nowhere is this more evident than at our International Conventions. This past July our convention was held in Boston and as your District Governor , I was privileged to attend. I can tell you that the International Convention is a spectacular event .Tens of thousands of Lions gathered in Boston. Every part of the world was represented with each nation proudly displaying its customs and culture. It is a wonderful time to rejoice in being a Lion , but serious work is done at the convention as well .As incoming District Governor , I participated in a six day seminar with international president Jimmy Ross and other Lion Leaders .At that seminar ,international president was very clear about what our priorities were to be and what he expected of us.

This year our largest and most important initiative is Campaign Sight First II. It is the largest because it involves all 1.3 millions Lions in all parts of the world. It is most important because it will have a global impact on one of the oldest and most devastating plagues of human kind-blindness
When you consider the millennia during which blindness has caused suffering and despair in our world ,we Lions have had relatively little time to make an impact. We began fighting blindness only in 1925 when Helen Keller challenged us to become the “knights of the Blind” in the great battle against darkness.
But, we have accomplished so much in a short time Once dedicated to the cause ,we attacked it with all our energy and in the past 80 years ,we Lions have done more to alleviate the suffering caused by blindness than had been done in all the thousand years that came before
But in an even shorter time ,the 16 years since 1990-we have accomplished more than in the previous 65 years .We have taken on the leading causes of preventable blindness and pushed back their advance for the first time in human history.
In 1990, there were approximately 40 million blind people in the world and experts predicted that the number could double by 2015.Today , the estimated blind population stands at 37 million –an actual reduction in the number of people suffering from blindness, despite a vast increase in the worlds overall population .This historic turning of the tide could not have been accomplished without Lions Club International and Lions could not have done our part without Sight First , one of the most effective and efficient public health projects ever launched.

You know that Sight First has provided millions of cataract surgeries ,built hospitals and clinics ,trained eye-care workers and distributed medicines that have all but eliminated river blindness in some parts of the world. In the process ,we have saved the sight the of 27 million people and become indispensable leaders in the world .In the process ,we have saved the sight of 27 million people and become indispensable leaders in the worldwide fight against blindness. Some examples in our district where Sight First has worked ,constructing and equipping are ;
In Zimbabwe -3 eye clinics built for US$ 1.2m in Lupane ,Gwanda and Vic Falls
In Botswana -1 eye clinic at Mochudi at the cost of US$ 109,000
In Malawi –At Liliongwe and Blantyre at a cost of US$ 3 million

This is the money that was raised in 1988-1990 with no help from Africa. Out of US$ 150 m raised then ,Africa has got the biggest percentage
Did we contribute to this initial US$150 raised in 1988-1990?Of course by being a part of this global service club organization…..We do not have to do it ourselves as Malawi, Mozambique , Botswana or even Zimbabwe. It does not matter whether the money we raised here benefits us in our own countries. We do things not for ourselves but for the entire humanity. We are International Lions. We are Lions of the world.

And now the money is almost finished

I tell you this because the world again faces a crisis and has presented Lions with a great challenge and opportunity. Once more ,without further action , the worlds blind population could double by 2020.But Lions will take action .Through campaign sight first II , we will raise a minimum of US$ 150 million .This will ensure that Sight First can continue and expand on its extraordinary record of success.
As Lions of Africa, we have been given an opportunity to participate this time. Aren’t we proud to be part of this history? The campaign has already achieved great success, raising US$76 million even before the start of this first year of intensive fund raising. But there is much more that must be done .Less than two years remain to raise an additional US$74 million and the time to act is now

Our early success has been due ,in large part to the overwhelming passion with which Lions responded to the campaigns program .The success of Sight First II will mean that 37 million people , who would otherwise be blind ,will see- because of what we Lions do this year and next .

Our District has a target of US$150 000 and so far US$ 79 500 has been raised .
Through Campaign Sight first II ,we will be able to save the sight of entire cities and nations. Think of it…
That is ….as many people as three times the population of Kenya
More than the population of all the District 412 countries i.e. Botswana, Malawi , Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
The numbers are large and impressive , but they are more than notations on some grand scoreboard of service. The countries you have just imagined are filled with people-people just like those we serve in our home communities. they are ; Men and women who will continue to work and provide for their families
Children ,who will grow and learn and take their places in their communities
Grandparents , who will see their grand children for the first time
We cannot let them down. Serving as knights of the blind is our most deeply held value of our organization.
If Lions accomplish so much in such a short time, think of what you Leos can do. You all know how to raise funds –you are Leos and you do it successfully year after year. But Sight First II is something different .It requires commitment over and above our usual service. It calls for partnerships with Lions clubs and extra ordinary action
Our success together cannot be achieved by goodwill alone. We need to have a plan that would have a global impact and would change the world for years, even for generations to come
I ask you to invest in the future of our world .Some of you know people who can personally give donations , they be individuals or corporate .Lions have received extra ordinary gifts ,of US$100 000 like the 38 Lead Gifts. But how many of our members of your communities could give even US$100.00? With gifts like these ,your clubs and yourselves could get recognitions from LCI.
Together with your sponsoring clubs involve your communities. What makes your home town special? What kinds of people live there? Are they the kind of people who care about their fellow human beings and want to lessen the amount of human suffering in the world. I am sure they are and you can invite them to make a difference in the world

Please work closely with your sponsoring Lions clubs. They can provide any advice or information that you need .adapt and tailor it to the needs and customs of your club-but do not delay! Every minute lost means that somewhere in the world , another child has fallen victim to blindness. Most people are cut off from their livelihood .More people are consigned to live out their remaining years in darkness, dependent on the care of others

You can change this. With your help ,fewer and fewer people will suffer this terrible fate. Working together , we Lions will change this.

The time to act is now .The world is waiting for our help

Thank you

Leo Region 2 Chairperson Report, 2006 - 2007, presented at the Leo District 412
Convention' University of Botswana, 6- 9 April 2007,

About Region Chairperson
Leo Chris Bvunzawabaya Club is from Harare West, Region: 2 Joined the Leo Club program in the leoistic year as a member of Leo Club of Chiredzi in the 1998-1999 to 20001-2002 then moved to Harare were I joined the Leo Club of Harare West in the leoistic year 2002-2003

Introduction

The Leoistic year 2006- 2007 was a difficult and momentous one for the Region 2; difficult bacause of an extremely challenging economic environment that saw inflation averaging 1033% and momentous with the revival of the region.
It is pleasing to note that the revival of our region has proceeded smoothly and the results at Region 2 have been particulary pleasing with the being turned around in a relatively short space of time from my appointment of Region 2 Chairperson at the beginning of the year.
It is indeed remarkable that all these achievements by the Region were made against the background of a deteriorating and challenging macro economic environment, proved to be a very challenging period for most Zimbabweans.

State of the Region

Region 2 is made up of 12 clubs namely Harare West, Kutama, Peterhouse, Hillcrest, Nyamawuru, Dangamvura, Nyanga, Christe Mambo, St Faiths, St Mary's Magdalene,, Chemukute
In addition to old clubs namely Harare West, Kutama, Peterhouse, Nyanga, St Faiths, Mary's, Peterhouse the revival of Chemukute we officially welcomed Dangamvura, Hillcrest, Nyamawuru and Christe Mambo who are yet to get a sponsor.

Twinning

The region through its region chair has twinned with region all the other regions especially region 2, 3 and 4. Helped in the revival of Bulawayo Omega by introducing former alpha leos to the region chair. However twinning with region 1 and 5 proved dificult to get hold of the chairpersons.

Club Visits

I conducted a very successful orientation seminar held on the 20th of September at Scouts Hall which was well attended by Dangamvura leos and graced by Mutare the Mountain Dew Lions Club members where i chronicled on the history of the Leo Club Program

On the 21st of September 2006 i had an opportunity to visit Mutare Agricultural Show were I met members of the Mutare Lions Club and Mutare the Mountain Dew who were on duty, fellowship with them.
Ivisited Hillcrest and Dangamvura Leos on the 23 of February 2007 in the company of the District President during his club visits

I Had the opportunity to visit Peterhouse Leos on 24 february 2007 once again in the company of the LDP.
I Visited the Leo club of Chiredzi in March 2007

D412 Zone C Leadership Workshop

I attended the Lions District 412 Zone C Leadership Workshop held Gowans Club in Harare in December 2006 where i had an honour of meeting the District Governor Lion Major Kebbie Konie, Vice District Governor Lion Ray Sibanda, District Cabinet Secretary Lion Frances M Sherpherd- Palmer, it was a once in a life to me opportunity to learn on leadership. We were presented with certificates of attendances.
District Governor Club Visit

The District Governor Lion Major Kebby Konie visited the Leo Club of Harare West and the Leo Club of Harare West at a function held at Crowne Plaza, Monomotapa hotel. It was an eye opening occassion where we had a one- on- one encounter with the district governor. We were presented with the governor's banner and pins

District 412 1st Council Meeting

A very successful 1st Council Meeting was hosted by the Leo Club of Harare West in August which was held at Harare Institute of Technology. In attendance were Leos from Chiredzi,
Redcliff, Solusi, Peterhouse, St Faiths, Nyanga, Dangamvura. The meeting was graced by Lion Pat Mapanda, Lion Cynthia Maweni and Lion Tofara Nyamwena. Leos interacted and shared ideas with the main highlight being the social held at the end of the day which raised a substantive amount that boosted the District 412 board's dry coffers as all members left with smiles.

Communication
Communication has greatly improved with the whole region always the first with the news within the region, however there are some hitches which can be delt with by the end of the year
Public Relations

The level of publicity was commendable in the region with activities among them the Sight First Commemorations aired on both Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation Television and Radio News
District Dues

Payment of district dues by most clubs continue to be a thorn in the flesh maily because of lack of communication to the clubs by the respective authorities given the mandate to run the affairs of the district treasury. To this end most clubs are not in good standing as traditionally they get communation from the treasurer therefore opted to go by tradition, unfortunately no one communicated to them.

Appreciation
On behalf of the region i wish to acknowledge the contributions of various stakeholders for the Region's perfomance in the year under review. It has taken tremendous effort and commitment on my part to steer the region's clubs to post excellent results during an exciting period of revival against the background of a difficult economic environment characterised by unprecedented challenges. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my fellow District Board members, Region 2 Leo Clubs, Leos, Patrons and Leo advisors for their commendable perfomance under these challenging circumstances. I have no doubt in my mind that the team work and commitment within the region will continue to deliver good results in the Leoistic Year 2006-2007 and beyond.

LEO DISTRICT 412
LEO DISTRICT PRESIDENTS REPORT
Report to the 3rd Council Meeting on the 7th of April 2007 held at UB Gaborone

Greetings to you all

As I pass on the mantle of leadership to the next LDP I am pleased that the Leo District board performed well .Although they is still room for improvement. We sure did motivate and we all worked as a team as per our theme.
MALAWI
During the past years they was a noticeable growth in Leo club activities, since the first club Blantyre Secondary School was established .Lions took pride in the surge ,Leos served with pride. The local media was awash with Leo news and Leos became a house hold name. These gains that the early pioneers is being slowly eroded. The number of active and reporting clubs have dropped to a handful. A lot of factors have contributed to the decline in the activities of Leo activities. The main factor that I think is hampering growth is the issue of continuity. When a club was established and flourished they was no deliberate policy of recruitment. When the crop of Leos left, lets say a school the clubs took a down turn and slowly and slowly and over a period most clubs would struggle. With no motivation and guiding it has been tough going for Leos in Malawi. With such a background all hope is not lost. Things are slowly getting back on track, inroads are being made and a few clubs have been revived. An appeal to all Lions clubs in the regions is that they should take a keen and active role in Leo club activities. The Leos need all the support they can get from the Lions. To those that have not yet sponsored a Leo club, the future is in the youth so please sponsor a Leo Club. A Big thanks to the Leo Chairperson for Malawi Lion Patricia Mwase for her efforts
Zimbabwe
With triple inflation digits ,the economic down turn of the country has also dealt a negative blow to Leo club activities. Take for example this convention; it requires close to 1 Million dollars to attend. How many of our working parents can afford this. If they can afford this they will surely be more pressing issues that need attention Most affected are the omega Leos who most of them are bread winners. With all the stress and hustles they have found little time to serve. With all these challenges they are also opportunities to serve .They have been tremendous service to the communities in some clubs.
Botswana
They is a lot of potential in this country. The biggest challenge during this year has been the information black out .No one is quite sure of how well the clubs are doing. The few that know are not telling. I think its time we move back to the basics ,that is the normal way to report about club activities .A copy to the advisor ,a copy to the board an a copy to international. This is the only remedy of the issue of non communication.
Never the less clubs that are reporting in Botswana have been serving with pride
Overally the district has a lot of potential and it is up to each and every Leo to do his/her best.
Thanking all those who helped in making this year a memorable one for all the leos in the dIstrict.
