Thornhill High School Leos Report September to October 08

Theme for our Leoistic year is "THERE IS NO IMPACT WITHOUT CENTRE"

The leos Thornhill Leos club club was inviet to the wedding of Lion Chidume of Gweru Lions club held on the 8th of September at Gweru Lions Den and the club did all the catering for the wedding, Cooking, serving a total of 200 guests and the washing of all dishes and cleaning-up after the wedding. The club got a donation in the form of a cheque ($3000.00) and this was used to pay for transport to attend the Redcliff-Leos workshop.
The Club then hosted The Senior Promenade Concert for the school leavers.The Guest Of Honour was The Gweru Lions President, Lion Victor Wasara. Other guests included Lion Ray Sibanda, The immediate Past District Governor, Lion Glorify Dr Maundukure and his wife Lion Gladis and Lion Chaka. The concert was a resounding success and the funds raised are to be used towads the Mayor's Christmas Cheer fund and the following projects..

NEXT PROJECTS: NOVEMBER 01- DECEMBER 01

01. Waste Paper Collction- The club is to collect all plastic containers and plastic paper then send to Chiredzi Sugar Refiners for recycle.

02. Mayor's Christmas Cheer fund- The Gweru Mayor has asked the Thornhill leos to organize activities for the function to be held before the 1st of October.

03. Tree Planting Day-The club is to plant trees at a Children's home during the first week of December.

Challenges Encountered

01. Some of the club's fundraising activities were denied by the school adminstration but we feel they were just postpond.
02. Third Term is a busy schooling term with a lot of exams therefore some projects could not be carried out but as well postpond

ACTIVITIES

Campaign
We carried out a 3 day campaign from the 18th – 20th August 2008 at the University of Botswana student Centre. The event was successful and we managed to recruit more than 30 people.

Induction of new members and installation of the office bearers (24 August)
7 prospective leos were inducted. The induction was done by Lions Club Of Gaborone President Lion Pillai.
Office bearers were installed by Lion David

Food Trolley
Kgale Spar has allowed us to put up a food trolley at their store for their customers to donate food and toiletry which will be donated in Kasane during the December Service Trip.

Bookstall
We will be carrying out a bookstall at the club office starting from the 8th of October 2008. The bookstall was launched yesterday (26 September 2008) at the UB student centre.

Litter Picking (27 August 2008)
It was carried out before the Region Meeting in Lobatse. We were joined by the other clubs which attended the region meeting. It was done around Lobatse Senior Secondary School.

UPCOMING PROJECTS
Blood Donation – The famous G-west (ub) blood donation campaign will be held from the 20th-24th of October
Dinner Dance – The 2nd Annual Dinner Dance will be held on the 8th of November 2008
December Service Trip – This year we will be going to Kasane.

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Region III and V Conferences

Congratulations to Leos Catherine and Kago for organising and conducting very successful Conferences.

I trust the Leos in attendance learnt a lot from the meetings and will share this knowledge.

'ENHANCING LEADERSHIP QUALITIES THROUGH EFFECTIVE TRAINING'

Who are Leos

In 1957, Coach Jim Graver started the Leo ball rolling. Chances are, that ball was a baseball. Graver was the coach of the Abington High School, Pennsylvania, USA, baseball team. Graver was also an active member of the Glenside, Pennsylvania, Lions Club. With fellow Lion, William Ernst, Graver talked about starting a service club for high school boys. So they asked their fellow Lions for support. Without hesitation, the Glenside Lions agreed that a Lions youth group was a good idea. Graver and Ernst set to work. On December 5, 1957, the Glenside Lions presented a charter to the Abington High School Leo Club whose members were mostly made up of the high school's baseball team.As the world's first Leo club, the group created the Leo acronym - Leadership, Equality, Opportunity (Equality was later changed to Experience.) And, the group chose maroon and gold - their school colors - to serve as the Leo club colors.
Leo Club's Objective and Motto
In October 1967, the board of directors of Lions Clubs International adopted the Leo Club Program as an official program of the association. Open to males and females, the objective of the Leo Club Program was (and still is):"...to provide the youth of the world (with) an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community."
The Leo club motto is:
Leadership - Leos develop skills as organizers, time managers and motivators of their peers.
Experience - Leos learn the importance of cooperation through community service.
Opportunity - Membership provides young people with a chance to excel, to develop positive charatcer traits, and to receive recognition for their contributions to the community.

District 412 covers 4 countries namely Botswana,Malawi,Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The Leo programme started in the District with the chartering of the Gwelo Omega Leo Club sponsered by the Lions club of Gweru.
Since then the Lions have continued to sponser new Leo Clubs and to date they are over 50 clubs in the district
