LEO DISTRICT PRESIDENT’S REPORT

1.0. INTRODUCTION
Firstly, I would like to congratulate LRII Chairperson Leo Brian Sairai, Kutama School Alphas and their patron for all the hard work they put into making this a very successful District 2nd Council Meeting. Thank you.
It is indeed encouraging to see such a large gathering, despite the harsh economic conditions in our country today. Your attendance is appreciated. I hope we will have a very informative meeting.

2.0. MEMBERSHIP
To date there are still only 28 Leo clubs registered at LCI. Regardless, our membership continues to grow as we see the formation of new clubs. I would like to specially mention Kriste Mambo Alphas in Region II and Lilongwe Technical Leo Club in Region I.

3.0. DISTRICT ACTIVITIES
Region III and Region V Leos had their regional meetings in September. I attended both meetings held in Redcliff and Lobatse respectively. This gave me an opportunity to meet Leos in Region V, collectively, as I had intended on making club visits during the 1st Quarter of the year.
On both occasion I gave a presentation on the Lion/Leo Relationship, which I am very passionate about. I will keep stressing the importance of maintaining a good relationship with our Sponsoring Lions, as this builds trust and allows us to serve our communities better.

4.0. CLUB VISITS
Since the last Council Meeting, I only managed to visit Camelot Alphas in Kwekwe in September. Due to financial constraints, I was not able to attend inductions at Fletcher High in Gweru, Kyle College and Victoria High School in Masvingo. Nevertheless, I still intend to visit Region I in the 2nd Quarter of the year.

5.0. LIONS ACTIVITIES
The Lions 1st Zone E Meeting was held at the Redcliff Lions Den on 30 August 2008. I was able to attend this meeting. I would like to encourage Leos to attend Lions meetings whenever possible.

6.0. CONCLUSION
As we approach the festive season, let us remember our pledge ‘to serve’. Give to those less fortunate and continue to perform ‘Miracles through Service’ as we aim to be ‘Everyday Heroes’ in our communities.

PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES

1. Campaign

We carried out a thereby campaign from the 18^th-20^th August 2008 at the University of Botswana Student Centre. The aim of the activity was to recount new members to the club. The event was very successful, as we managed to recount a lot of new members.

2. Installation of the office bearers

The 2008/2009 office bearers were installed on 24^th August 2008, by Lion David Nkwe, the club’s advisor.

3. Bookstall Launch

We are carrying out a bookstall at the club office in UB. The stall was officially launched on the 26^th September 2008 at UB Student Centre. We also printed at some memorandums and leaflets to ask for donations in the form of book and novels that we will be selling at the bookstall.

5. Litter picking

The project was carried out on the 27^th September 2008 (during the region meeting) in Lobatse Secondary School. This was a twinning project between Leo Clubs of Gaborone West (UB) and Leo Club of Lobatse. We were also joined by other clubs who attended the Region meeting.

6..Selling of blood donation T-Shirts Blood donation t-shirts which were left during the post campaigns were sold to club members at P5 as a fundraising activity.

7. Blood Donation

This semester’s blood donation campaign was a great success. The event ran from the 20-24^th October 2008, on both UB campuses (FET and the main campus). 217 donors graced the activity at the FET campus and 331 donor donated at the main campus. We were working in conjunction with the Nation Blood Transfussion Services who provided biscuits and drinks for donor and the Health & Wellness Centre in UB who provided t-shirts for donors.

8. Food Trolley

Initially we had put up a food trolley at two busy Supermarkets in Gaborone, Pick n Pay in Riverwalk at Kgale Super Spar in Game City, for people to donate food and toiletry items. This was not bearing fruit as people were not donating and were deciding to go to the stores to encourage people to donate on the 25^th and 26^th of October 2008. We collected over 200 items of food and toiletry and cash amounting to P2121.70.

9. Dinner Dance

The 2^nd Annual Dinner Dance was held on the 8^th of November 2008, at the University of Botswana New Staff Large. Our guest of honour was Hon MP for Gaborone Central DR Dumelang Saleshando and Lions also attended the event. The event was a great success.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

1. University of Botswana’s unveiling of the logo

We were invited by the University of Botswana Student Representative Council to participate in the Unveiling of the new us Logo. We put up a stall and educated people more about our club.

2. University of Botswana World Aids Day Commemoration

We also participated in the commemoration of the World AIDS day in UB, and the 1^ST December 2008 where were gave a speech about what we do in our club to fight AIDS.

Where: 2nd Council Meeting-Kutama College-Zimbabwe.

Greetings fellow Leos, Lions and Patrons.

This report is the same as the one presented at the first council meeting as nothing much has happened since then even though clubs are active ( Please refer to individual clubs reports for club activities).

First off, my apologies for not being present at this council meeting for reasons beyond my control.

I took over from Leo Hazi after the last Leo convention and we worked together up until the end of the Leoistic year. During this time I’ve been faced with the challenge of uniting a rather scattered region which has never been easy for my predecessors. There are 10 active Clubs in the region:

1. Leo Club of G-West

2. Leo club of Kgalemang

3. Leo Club of Mahalapye

4. Leo Club of Tsodilo

5. Leo Club of Molepolole

6. Leo Club of Madiba

7. Leo Club of Swaneng

with most being rather inactive such clubs are

1. Leo Club of Mater Spei

2. Leo club of Selebi-Phikwe

3. Leo club of Serowe-Ikageng

4. Leo Club of Ranokanyane

These are clubs which have been chattered but have since got out of action for various reasons, and we are working on reviving these clubs.

However, there has also been entrance to the region by new clubs which are yet to be chattered. These are Prospective Leo clubs of:

1. Molefhi

2. Lobatse

3. Francistown

4. Maun.

Even though these clubs have not yet been chattered, they have indeed shown great interest in Leo and it activities. Their efforts are highly commendable and I look forward to a great Leoistic year with these clubs. I am of great faith that Leo Region 5 will be tops very soon!

I have had club visits to two clubs this July and this was indeed beneficial to me and to the clubs, these are Leos of Madiba, Mahalapye, Kgalemang and Swaneng. The Leos brought out their grievances which included not much interaction between Leos and ideas for projects. However, after the meeting, they all promised to produce top projects and come the next convention, they will scoop all the awards. (REFER TO THE REGION MEETING REPORT ATTACHED).
